Enjoy meeting selected artisans & gear makers, sharing their skills and traditions related to the vaquero techniques of rawhide braiding, silversmithing, weaving, leatherwork. Take the opportunity to share the vaquero history experience on the historic "Rancho" grounds where early vaqueros gathered herds of livestock during the Mission and Rancho era 1797 - 1800's.

Classical Californio style vaquero horseman Bruce Sandifer from Santa Barbara, CA will recap the California vaquero heritage and demonstrate the California spade bit for the finished bridle horse. Bruce with his horse will demonstrate proper bit usage and benefits. PLUS a special treat - you will see first-hand how bits fit and look inside an actual custom-built horse skull mechanically made to allow see-through vision into the mouth and pallet. It's a great educational tool. Bring your bit! Check it out. Bruce will be with us all weekend and will enjoy speaking with you.

Dedicated traditional California vaquero-style horseman Richard Caldwell based in Alturas, CA will share his knowledge, experience and benefits of training horses from the snaffle bit, hackamore, 2-rein and then spade bit for a finished bridle horse. He will review the stages visually for you using his horse and discuss the subtle differences in techniques and benefits. His many years of buckarooing, award winning NRCHA competitions, and as a successful vaquero-style clinician, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with true bridle horse enthusiasts. Feel free to ask Richard any questions during the weekend.
Presenting with Richard Caldwell will be Jo Johnson, vaquero-style trainer & Morgan stock horse breeder. Learn about the role traditional working Morgans played in California's early vaquero times. Jo's many years of colt starting & training various breeds, led her to selecting the Morgan just as many early California vaqueros did for its confirmation, mentality & solid physical aptitude to do the job - in the arena, open cattle ranges, obstacles, packing & long distance riding. Jo brings these tried & true characteristics of the working Morgan to the forefont once again.
